call centres: anger over shift to india
WORKERS, MAY 2003 ISSUE
Both the Communications Workers Union (CWU) and Amicus are threatening industrial action over proposals to shift call centre jobs from Britain to India.
The CWU are fighting 700 jobs losses at BT and Amicus are trying to prevent Prudential and Norwich Union moving 850 and 1000 jobs respectively. With cost savings upwards of 80% of costs, employers want to transfer an estimated 100,000 British call centre jobs to India in the next 5 years.
