steel - grim future

WORKERS, JANUARY 2004 ISSUE

The National Trade Union Steel Co-ordinating Committee has presented Corus, the Anglo-Dutch inheritors of British Steel, with plans to save steel production on Teesside and Llanwern. In November, Corus announced £71 million in investment for its furnaces in Port Talbot, aimed at increasing production of steel slab.

Named 'Phoenix', the plan identifies key investment and enhanced production at some of the already established most efficient steel producing plants in the world. There are to be further discussions with Corus, led by the steel union ISTC.
