AT THE start of December the impending collapse of the Jarvis construction company took a great forward leap as the company sacked 50% of its head office staff in a bid to stay afloat.
The fate of Private Finance Initiatives linked to Jarvis — hospitals, schools and youth centres — hangs in the balance. Phase 2 of the Whittington hospital in North London (see picture, above), due for completion this year, is now in jeopardy. Jarvis claims that it will now be finished in 2006, but if Jarvis' position worsens further will it ever be completed?
